The Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA) is seeking an Executive Director.

FTA wants a visionary, hands-on leader with the strongest communication and presentation skills, a high degree of organization and the ability to build consensus among groups with competing interests. The executive director should have a willingness to both direct and support a talented staff of self-starters.

FTA is an 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides services to the tax administration agencies in each of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia. The executive director reports to a Board of Trustees and is responsible for managing a staff of five full-time program professionals, an office administrator and three part-time and contractual staffers. FTA’s primary duties are to plan and implement programs of research, information exchange, training and intergovernmental coordination. Besides coordinating activities among the state tax agencies, FTA works on its members’ behalf with the IRS and other federal agencies, including on occasion representing its members’ interests before Congress. Preference will be given to those with tax agency experience or who otherwise have a demonstrated knowledge of state or local tax administration. Candidates who possess degrees in public administration, economics, law or other related fields as well as candidates with at least five years of executive experience are encouraged to apply.

Performance of duties will require domestic airline travel to between 10 and 12 conferences per year. Working hours will include weekend work or unplanned evenings at the office on occasion. FTA is a Mac-based office. 

FTA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Relocation to the Washington, D.C. area within six months, or as the pandemic permits, is a condition of employment. FTA has remote work capabilities, but an association executive must be prepared to work from the office on a regular basis.
