To State Tax Administrators:

FTA Motor Fuel Tax Section Chair Roland Marr, from the Illinois Department of Revenue, the South Dakota Department of Revenue, and the FTA Board of Trustees extend a cordial invitation to attend the 2001 Annual Meeting of the FTA Motor Fuel Tax Section. The meeting will be held at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City, South Dakota, September 23-26, 2001. The FTA Uniformity Committee will meet on Saturday, September 22, with subcommittees meeting on Friday, September 21.

The conference will begin with registration and an opening reception on Sunday, September 23. Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to general sessions in the morning, with breakout sessions scheduled in the afternoon. Wednesday morning will include a general session with various topics of interest to motor fuel tax administrators. Regional meetings will be held Monday afternoon, and the Annual Business Meeting will be held Tuesday afternoon. The annual banquet will be held Tuesday evening, September 25.

Conference Program
The conference program consists of a mix of general session and concurrent breakout sessions presenting different topics of interest to state motor fuel tax administrators. Topics include alternative fuels for the future, bankruptcy issues, taxpayer friendly opportunities, self audits, pros and cons of outsourcing, along with updates from the FHwA, Uniformity Committee, the motor fuel industry and the IRS ExFIRS/ExSTARS/ExTOLE projects. (See the attached preliminary agenda.)

Social Events
The conference will begin with Sunday’s opening reception, which will be full of "surprises." The conference banquet and cocktail party will be held Tuesday night.

Optional activity planned:
Saturday evening: Bus trip to Deadwood, South Dakota at an additional charge of $15.00.
Monday evening: Bus trip to Mount Rushmore at an additional charge of $15.00.

Guest Program
The South Dakota Department of Revenue will not be having an organized guest program but will be providing transportation if the guest would like to go somewhere. The Guest fee covers the Sunday opening reception and the Tuesday night banquet.

Hotel Registration
The rate at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn for all attendees is $78 single, $86 double plus 8% (current) tax. Reservations can be made by calling the hotel directly at (605) 348-4000 or toll-free at (800) 465-4329. Remember to inform the hotel that you are attending the FTA Motor Fuel Tax Annual Meeting to receive the discounted block rate. The cut-off date for hotel reservations is August 21, 2001. Transportation
The Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn provides a free shuttle to and from the airport. Airport Express Shuttle also services the airport. They are located by the baggage claim at the airport and their fee -- based on the number of people -- is from $7.00 to $17.00.

Climate
In late September, Rapid City temperatures tend to range from 50 to 60 degrees during the day and 30 to 40 degrees in the evenings.

Meetings — business casual

Banquet — semi-formal.
